Belt of Venus

Another of my Project366 photos, this was taken behind the local community college in Saint Charles.

The ‘Belt of Venus’ is an atmospheric phenomenon that occurs just before sunrise or just after sunset. It’s not particularly rare, but this pinkish band often goes unnoticed because most eyes are drawn to the actual sunrise or sunset.

The picture above was taken looking east at sunset. Note the dark band beneath the pink belt. This is earth’s shadow creeping up from the horizon… When watching this band arch up across the sky, you are literally watching night approaching!
